S100β: A Predictive Biomarker for Neural Trauma with Therapeutic Potential

چکیده
for making both diagnoses and prognoses of neurological injury. Of the more than 20 isoforms in the S100 protein family, S100ß displays unique biomarker and diagnostic properties in ectodermic derived normal neurons and certain malignancies. The purpose of this focused review is to highlight and discuss findings that support the notion that S100ß can be used as a biomarker to indicate the presence and extent of neural trauma.

Differential temporal expression of S100β in developing rat brain
Radial glial cells (RGs) originally considered to provide scaffold to the radially migrating neurons constitute a heterogeneous population of the regionally variable precursor cells that generate both neurons as well as glia depending upon the location and the timing of development. Hence specific immunohistochemical markers are required to specify their spatiotemporal location and fate in the ...
متن کاملS100β as a serum marker in endocrine resistant breast cancer
BACKGROUND Endocrine therapy is standard treatment for estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer. However, its efficacy is limited by intrinsic and acquired resistance. Here the potential of S100β as a biomarker and inhibition of its signaling network as a therapeutic strategy in endocrine treated patients was investigated. METHODS The expression of S100β in tissue and serum was assessed ...
متن کاملS100 calcium binding protein B as a biomarker of delirium duration in the intensive care unit – an exploratory analysis
BACKGROUND Currently, there are no valid and reliable biomarkers to identify delirious patients predisposed to longer delirium duration. We investigated the hypothesis that elevated S100 calcium binding protein B (S100β) levels will be associated with longer delirium duration in critically ill patients. METHODS A prospective observational cohort study was performed in the medical, surgical, a...
متن کاملP108: Microglia in Traumatic Brain Injury
Microglia is one of the first innate immune components. These cells account about 5 to 10% of the entire adult brain cells and are activated by trauma. Complex-mediated inflammatory responses occur through cellular and molecular events during and after the traumatic brain injury (TBI). In-lesion area astrocytes, microglia, and damaged neurons begin to secrete cytokines and chemokines. Microglia...
متن کاملCorrelation between serum S100β protein levels and cognitive dysfunction in patients with cerebral small vessel disease: a case–control study
The present study was designed to explore the correlation between serum S100β levels and cognitive dysfunction in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). A total of 172 SVD patients participated in the study, and they were assigned to patients with no cognitive impairment (NCI group) and those with vascular cognitive impairment no dementia (VCIND group). In total, 105 people were rec...
